With so many great TV shows on the various networks on cable or satellite and streaming services including Netflix and many others it can be difficult to find the time to watch them all so I’ve come up with a list of the top 5 best comedy tv shows that you can watch right now, to qualify the shows must be scripted and currently having broadcast new episodes within the last couple of years instead of using the scores from TV critics I will count these down in order based on which shows I enjoyed the best. # Mr. Bean – Comedy, Family
Mr. Bean is a British sitcom created by Rowan Atkinson and Richard Curtis, produced by Tiger Aspect and starring Atkinson as the title character. The sitcom consisted of 15 episodes that were co-written by Atkinson alongside Curtis and Robin Driscoll for the pilot, it was co-written by Ben Elton. The series was originally broadcast on ITV, beginning with the pilot on 1 January 1990 and ending with “The Best Bits of Mr. Bean” on 15 December 1995.
Based on a character originally developed by Atkinson while he was studying for his master’s degree at Oxford University, the series centres on Mr. Bean, described by Atkinson as “a child in a grown man’s body”, as he solves various problems presented by everyday tasks and often causes disruption in the process. The series has been influenced by physical comedy actors such as Jacques Tati and those from early silent films.
During its original five-year run, Mr. Bean met with widespread acclaim and attracted large television audiences. The series was viewed by 18.74 million viewers for the episode “The Trouble with Mr. Bean” and has received a number of international awards, including the Rose d’Or. The series has also been sold in 245 territories worldwide and has inspired an animated spin-off and two theatrical feature-length films along with Atkinson reprising his role as Mr. Bean for a performance at the London 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony, television commercials and several sketches for Comic Relief. Besides the acclaim of the show, another reason for the show’s appeal in hundreds of territories worldwide is the fact that the show uses very little intelligible dialogue, making it much more accessible to people who know little or no English.
# F.R.I.E.N.D.S – Comedy, Romance
Friends is an American sitcom television series, created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, which aired on NBC from September 22, 1994, to May 6, 2004, lasting ten seasons. With an ensemble cast starring Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer, the show revolved around six friends in their 20s and 30s who lived in Manhattan, New York City. The series was produced by Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television. The original executive producers were Kevin S. Bright, Kauffman, and Crane.
Kauffman and Crane began developing Friends under the title Insomnia Cafe between November and December 1993. They presented the idea to Bright, and together they pitched a seven-page treatment of the show to NBC. After several script rewrites and changes, including title changes to Six of One and Friends Like Us, the series was finally named Friends.
Friends received acclaim throughout its run, becoming one of the most popular television shows of all time. The series was nominated for 62 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning the Outstanding Comedy Series award in 2002 for its eighth season. The show ranked no. 21 on TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time, and no. 7 on Empire magazine’s The 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time.
In 1997, the episode “The One with the Prom Video” was ranked no. 100 on TV Guide’s 100 Greatest Episodes of All-Time. In 2013, Friends ranked no. 24 on the Writers Guild of America’s 101 Best Written TV Series of All Time, and no. 28 on TV Guide’s 60 Best TV Series of All Time.
# The Big Bang Theory – Comedy, Romance
The Big Bang Theory is an American television sitcom created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, both of whom served as executive producers on the series, along with Steven Molaro. All three also served as head writers. The show premiered on CBS on September 24, 2007 and concluded on May 16, 2019, having broadcast a total of 279 episodes over 12 seasons.
The show originally centered on five characters living in Pasadena, California: Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper, both physicists at Caltech, who share an apartment Penny, a waitress and aspiring actress who lives across the hall and Leonard and Sheldon’s similarly geeky and socially awkward friends and co-workers, aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz and astrophysicist Raj Koothrappali. Over time, supporting characters were promoted to starring roles, including neuroscientist Amy Farrah Fowler, microbiologist Bernadette Rostenkowski, physicist Leslie Winkle, and comic book store owner Stuart Bloom.
The show was filmed in front of a live audience and was produced by Warner Bros. Television and Chuck Lorre Productions. The Big Bang Theory received mixed reviews from critics throughout its first season, but reception was more favourable in the second and third seasons. Later seasons saw a return to a lukewarm reception, with the show being criticized for a decline in comedic quality. Despite the mixed reviews, seven seasons of the show have ranked within the top ten of the final television season ratings, ultimately reaching the no. 1 spot in its eleventh season.
The show was nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series from 2011 to 2014 and won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series four times for Jim Parsons. In total, it won seven Emmy Awards from 46 nominations.
# How I Met Your Mother – Comedy, Romance
How I Met Your Mother is an American sitcom created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays for CBS. The series, which ran from 2005 to 2014, follows the main character, Ted Mosby, and his group of friends in New York City’s Manhattan. As a framing device, Ted, in the year 2030, recounts to his son and daughter the events that led him to meet their mother. How I Met Your Mother is a joint production by Bays & Thomas Productions and 20th Century Fox Television and syndicated by 20th Television.
The series was loosely inspired by Thomas and Bays’ friendship when they both lived in New York City. Known for its unique structure, humour, and incorporation of dramatic elements, How I Met Your Mother was popular throughout its run.
The show initially received positive reviews, while the later seasons received more mixed reviews. The show was nominated for 30 Emmy Awards and won ten. In 2010, Alyson Hannigan won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite TV Comedy Actress. In 2012, seven years after its premiere, the series won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Network TV Comedy, and Neil Patrick Harris won the award for Favorite TV Comedy Actor.
# Shameless – Comedy, Drama
Shameless is an American comedy-drama television series developed by John Wells which debuted on Showtime on January 9, 2011. It is an adaptation of Paul Abbott’s British series of the same name and features an ensemble cast led by William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum. The show is set in the South Side of Chicago and filmed throughout the city, as well as Los Angeles.
The series depicts the poor, dysfunctional family of Frank Gallagher, a single father raising six children. He spends his days drunk or in search of misadventures, and his children learn to take care of themselves. The show’s producers sought to distinguish this production from previous American working-class shows by highlighting how Frank’s alcoholism affects his family.
With the premiere of the ninth season on September 9, 2018, Shameless became the longest-running original scripted series in Showtime’s history. In January 2019, the series was renewed for a tenth season, which premiered on November 10, 2019. In January 2020, the series was renewed for its eleventh and final season to premiere in mid-2020.
